I don’t understand why the makers of Firefox publically announced that they have found a “critical security flaw” in the browser. So now that they announced and have given the details of the flaw, hackers can create a virus’ and damaging scripts to PC’s or networks.

I think it is to make people aware that there are problems with the browser so that they can be more careful while browsing sites.
Hackers have a way of finding out about “security flaws” and many a times it is they themselves who let the makers know the flaws and sometimes with possible solutions.
