    Hmm… are those mangoes?

Usually coconut trees do not branch out. This one has branches and also coconuts in each of the branches.

I live in the tropics and agree with Karthik. I’ve never seen a branching coconut tree before–and I’ve seen thousands of coconut trees. They’re usually just one straight stem up to the nuts cache and foliage burst. Beautiful and very productive like this, though!! :)

Right on that one Karthik, I really wonder where this coconut tree is actually from :O

The Three Heads palm is a rare botanical curiosity. It amounts to just one case, reported on a plantation of approximatively 1,000 hectares, (i.e. 150,000 palms) of a coconut tree whose stem has branched on two occasions.
Usually, the coconut palm only has a single terminal bud which emits all the organs: bunches, fronds and stem. This single bud, which is well protected, functions continually in a system of vertical spirals. In general, 12 to 18 fronds and inflorescences are produced each year. Over the same period, the coconut palm produces from 20 to 160 cm of stem, depending on the age and variety. therefore a coconut palm will never stop growing, until it dies.

Whew!! this is my first time to a coconut tree with many branches!!

  8. Many / Oct 21 2007

Yup, the coconut tree has too many branches: a normal one would only have one long stem.

My guess when I saw the photo was for the multiple branches which proved to be correct when read through comment. Anzil has come up with a good description.
