A search on Google for this resulted in 152,000 results, which leads me to conclude that this is a question that a lot of bloggers are asking one another.
Lorelle had also asked this a long back after reading Greg’s Post.
And, I came across the same question on an Orkut Community.
This post attempts to answer that question.
Why did I start?
I started this blog in October 2003. I had already tried out a test blog at some stupid host, but they died out with the closing of my site on that host. Lost quite a few of my entries, but they were test posts.
Every person I meet online (including those I am in regular contact with) asks the much overused and highly irritating question “What’s up?”
I don’t mind answering this once. But, after a while it gets monotonous and irritating.
And that is the real reason behind this blog.
Why do I blog today?
I am addicted ![]()
Actually, there are several reasons I blog today.
A personal account
While I do have a lot of general and technical posts, this blog’s main purpose is a written account of my life. It helps me on my trip down memory lane. That is why my posts tend to be descriptive and long.
My work
Most of you are aware of my work. That forms a chunk of my non-personal posts.
Popularity
My personal blog started picking up visitors and got really famous after I released my wordpress material.
Popularity is difficult to maintain. Today yet another reason I blog is to ensure that the site doesn’t disappear into oblivion.
Improvement
Blogging pushes you to do better, to improve the way you write. My writing has improved a lot over the past two years and I know there still is a lot of room for improvement.
Knowledge
This is indirect. In the process of finding something good to blog, I read a lot of other blogs and news, something I rarely did before. A direct consequence of this is that my knowledge has improved.
How much does it cost me?
Blogging can be expensive, both in time and money. Money because hosting my blog doesn’t come for free. And I need to find time to blog.
I think it is worth the time and money.
Ofcourse you can choose the easier and free option of hosting your blog at Blogger or WordPress.com.
But, if you crave for complete control, you have to host your own blog.
I won’t complain about cost today because I have been able to break even via advertisements and donations.
Why do you blog?
Enough said about me. What drives you to blogging?
Do you identify with the reasons I posted above?
Where are you hosted and why?

Great post Ajay. I agree with all your points. I just started blogging a few months ago for the same reasons.
