It would be more appropriate to have used the word “ordered” but I think “bought” shall pass. I also intended to post the details later but demand for the same has prompted this post.
I’ve never been a laptop person. I find them too cumbersome and prefer the computer with all it’s individual units. However, MBA makes it necessary for me to have a laptop and so I began my hunt for the same.
I had my eye on three brands viz. Dell, Lenovo and HP Compaq. Dell has a shipping duration of almost a month, while I believe Lenovo and HP are quicker in this respect. But, since I had time in my hands Dell was a good option. Have also received good feedback about Dell from two of my friends. Lenovo bought the IBM Think brand so I guess those are good. And my experience with HP Laptops has also been good.
So the main deciding factor was price in which Dell definitely beat the others.
Enough background details, here is the configuration of the laptop I picked up.

- 1024MB (2 X 512MB) DDR2 SDRAM
- 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7300 TurboCache
- Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Combination Drive with dual layer write capabilities
- DellTM Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module
- Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945 Dual Band 802.11a/g 5 4Mbps Wireless Mini Card
- 90W AC Adapter
- 6-cell 53Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery
- Internal 56K Modem
I was able to get the laptop for around Rs. 62,000 including taxes. Dell had a special promo running wherein I saved nearly 10,000 because I got an extra 512MB RAM, the DVD Writer and Rs. 4000 off!
I also made sure I took the 256MB GeForce card to ensure that the laptop stays top speed even if I graduate to higher versions of Windows Vista in the future.

I think a 1 Gb upgradeable RAM is better. Anyway, it`s still a great Laptop.
I`m also attending to buy either a laptop or a Desktop, But I choose the desktop. Can’t see my self doing my regular works on the small tiny laptop :s

i think Rs. 62,000 pretty expensive for dell…
best way to get laptop is to ask a friend or someone who traveling to usa to buy for you…
not a fan of dell…but for 50k you could have got a vaio which more sleek and sexy and better performance…

@Enblogopedia, the RAM can be upgraded in the future. 1GB is kinda sufficient for now.
@Puneet, I’ve customized the system and added some extras which pushed the price up 10G. Besides, I can’t expect someone to goto the US to pickup a laptop for me

It’s a good config, but I wish I had more of a budget, would have gone in for Vista Ultimate, 2GB RAM, bigger HDD and 9-Cell Battery.

Didn’t you give a thought about Sony? You have not even listed about it there
I personally prefer Sony for its High style with performance. I’m too now deciding upon a laptop. I’m planing for Sony VAIO VGN-SZ440. It is a great ultra-portable laptop. I will be placing a order in another 1 month.
I personally feel Dell Inspiron is not that worthy for 60K+ You would had to gonna for some other make with little extra price.

I’ve heard good reports about Dell. The Sony didn’t cross my mind at all. Well, that little more you talk about is actually nearl 15K more!
With MBA costs and the loan I’m taking, I don’t wanna stress myself of a laptop I won’t use more than for Word processing and blogging!

I always wonder why all bloggers act alike. I don’t mean that we resciprocate each other but.. somehow.. our mind acts alike.

I think you got a better deal than what you would find in the US. Also about buying Laptops in US and takig them to india, the last time I did that I ended up paying up Rs. 4000.00 to the customs duty guy, (which I think probalbly ended in some bar girls hand). Also congragulations on your admission to MBA school.
