New Look to Windows Live Mail beta

Logged in yesterday to my Windows Live Mail account and was completely blown away.

Firstly, the interface loaded in a jiffy, which was a really good experience from my past experiences with Windows Live Mail.

Next, it had a whole new look. You now have several user selectable themes and colors available at the click of a button.

For those unaware, Windows Live Mail is the new revamped interface of the old Hotmail. It has an Ajax interface with complete drag and drop support for emails. It also intergrates Live Contacts, Calendar and MSN Spaces.

Messages can be read either by themselves or in a Reading Pane.

You also can choose a light version of the interface, though I don’t think it needed with this update.

Hotmail is my oldest email account, registered way back in 1998 and I will confess that I haven’t used the email features of the account much, as I have always preferred Yahoo! Mail.

However, MSN has been a primary chat client, besides Yahoo! and GTalk.

I actually started using Windows Live recently after the beta version of the Mail interface released. And this was a little frustrating because the design had a lot to be desired.

I may however, start using Live Mail more often given this update.

Meebo has already gained a lot of popularity among the masses for their amazing web based chat service that lets you simultaneously login to MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, Gmail, AIM and IRC networks and chat with your friends there.

Though I usually login to my respective messengers, I have been using their service quite extensively and am a very satisfied user of the same.

With the launch of MeeboMe, they now let visitors to your site chat with you live, if you are logged into Meebo. While this is not a new concept, this is usually a paid service offered by several companies.

I am not sure if I will make full utilization of MeeboMe, but I have generated a widget as you can see below. (you may not be able to see it if you are using a feed reader)

Have given it a test run and I am pleased with the results so far. I may just decide to make it permanent!

One good feature I noticed is it’s tracking of the visitor even across browsers (I assume using their IP Address ?)
I’m sure this may be considered by users to be a privacy related issue. I don’t think it should be that much of a worry, because a good number of stat scripts are already doing basic tracking.

Just wish that they generate XHTML Compliant code. ~~Or maybe I should write a plugin for this?~~ The meebo me Plugin for WordPress is now available for download.

I have signed up at their forum and am providing some suggestions for making it even better.

Have been experiencing problems with my other blog and so following a suggestion by Michael, I visited #wordpress at irc.freenode.com.

Seems like quite a nice place to get help and maybe provide some.

Gonna be there more often, especially since I’m serious about development for WordPress.

As for the problem, others have been facing the timeouts as well. Am just going to wait and try later.

Yahoo Messenger 7 – A Miss!

Yahoo! today released their latest version (v7.0) of Messenger.

I had tried out the beta version during the release and gave them a lot of feedback through their feedback form. Maybe they don’t read their forms, or maybe they didn’t like what I wrote, because I didn’t find anything incorporated in the future betas or this final version.

Yes, you may ask why should they listen to me!?!
The answer is simple because I didn’t ask them to put anything new, but asked them to just keep the old :O

Two main reasons why I didn’t like this release:
1. Text recall feature. Pressing the up and down arrow keys used to recall the previously typed text both in the IM windows as well as the chat room. This was significantly missing in v7

2. Voice Auto-enables in Chat. This is one really really irritating “feature”. Whenever I get into a chat room voice chat is automatically enabled. Despite disabling it, once I change the room the voice gets renabled. What’s even worse is that it keeps throwing up a “Audio Mixer cannot be initialized”. I know I have my drivers installed and everything on my PC in perfect order. Besides, why is this the only application throwing up the error?
Lastly, I do not wish to use any of the voice features of Yahoo! for now and I do not have the option to disable voice.

3. It automatically launching my Mail client to send an email as opposed to letting me choose if I want to use my mail client or to use Yahoo! Mail

I do admit there are quite a few improvements / additions like the Spam Guard (though I don’t like it automatically adding spam ids to the block list).

I guess the main focus of this release has been the Voice call feature, however in the process other things have gotten sidelined. And sadly for me, since it keeps throwing up an error for the voice feature, I simply cannot even test it!

I wrote to Yahoo! Customer Care (their online Help site sucks) and got a very vague reply telling me how I should go about enabling voice and with absolutely no reply to my query. However, their second reply was a little bit more informative and suggested that I should try something else or switch back to v6.0.

Chose the easy way out for now, viz. switched back to v6.0 and will continue to use it until I find a good change in the next release of Yahoo! Messenger.
And if I am forced to upgrade to the latest version (as many a times old versions get no longer supported), I will have no option but to shift to an alternate client like Trillian or Gaim.
