I have updated my plugin Add to Feed. Add to Feed is a simple feed enhancement plugin that allows you to add custom text or HTML to posts in your WordPress blog feed.

You can add text before the content and/or after the content as well as a copyright message. All these can be customized.

As per user requests, I’ve added another feature to the plugin. The plugin now displays a link to the post in the feed. Henceforth, if someone scrapes your feed, then atleast you will get a link back. It will also help you track down any offenders because you would most likely get a pingback / trackback to the blog post.

It displays the text in the format:

Add to Feed was first posted on November 30, 2008 at 8:24 pm.

Another feature is the implementation of the new WordPress 2.7 Plugin Uninstall Method. Now, if you delete the plugin from your WordPress administration area, then will delete all the options from the database.

Lastly, it displays a horizontal line before adding the text after the content.

Existing users can upgrade their plugin from within the WordPress admin area.

Installing

1. Download Add to Feed.
2. Extract the contents of add-to-feed.zip to wp-content/plugins/ folder. You should get a folder called add-to-feed.
3. Activate the Plugin in WP-Admin.
4. Goto Settings > Add to Feed and set the options there

In order to tap the potential for Google Adsense for Feeds, I decided to move to Google’s feedproxy service.

About a week back I created a new feed that collates five of my feeds. This was done with the help of FeedBlendr. It is a good service, but there is a lot of room for improvement. The feed work but it seemed to give a problem with Feedburner.

I decided to give Yahoo! Pipes a shot as I originally intended to. The interface is easy to use but it doesn’t look at all welcoming. I haven’t let a single interface to this date benumb and I don’t intend to let Yahoo! Pipes be the first!

Got down to understanding how Yahoo! Pipes actually works and I was shocked to realize that it was actually really really easy to mix my feeds together!

All you need is a single Fetch module into which you feed in the locations of all your feeds. The output of this module is then sent to your Output module. You save and publish your pipe and you’re done!

I next got the RSS for the pipe and modified the Feedburner feed to point to this new RSS feed.

The result is a faster and possibly more reliable interface. Easy customization in case I wish to add or remove feeds. I’m sure I can do a lot more like limiting the number of articles and so on, but will take a bit more trial.

Have you tried out Yahoo! Pipes so far?

I’ve been pondering about a way to offer a single feed that will take into account all the different feeds that I publish.

Planet Ajay

I’ve been searching for services that offer this but will confess I’ve been largely unsuccessful. I ran across Feedblendr which aims at establishing just that.

I’ve combined the following feeds:

• Main Blog Feed
• Comments Feed
• Podcast
• Ajay on WordPress
• Support Forum

The new feed is served by Feedburner as usual and I’ve chosen to call it Planet Ajay. It’s also set to auto-discovery, so you’re browser or feed reader can pick it up.

Planet Ajay is perfect for readers who are subscribed to all my feeds. This eliminates the need for you to track several feeds.

I’m still looking for a better option than Feedblendr, because its refresh rate is slow. Do you have any suggestions for a better service?

Bye Bye MBL widget

I’ve also knocked off the MyBlogLog recent visitors widget for my community. I really like the widget, but MBL has become a lot slower than the early days and the widget has been really slowing down the loading of the page.

I may add the widget back in the future, but as of now it is knocked off. I’ve still maintained the code that will display the MBL Avatar next to your comment as that wasn’t too much of a problem (yet).

Suggest

I’m still looking for suggestions to improve visitor experience on the site. I’ve cut down on images to speed up the site, made more feeds available and have also ensured your comments count!

The past two months has seen a lot of changes to this blog. For one, I’ve changed the look yet again and have also added and removed a few other features.

Cosmetic Changes

I got rid of the header. With the new theme, the header looked totally out of place and occupied a good amount of surface area. The cosmetic changes have also worked well for adsense, which has doubled, but again not as much as what most others are making!

However, for those interested in advertising on this blog, you’ll now have you ads well above the fold!

New Comment Feed

I’ve been asked by many to include a comments feed. I added the comment feed about a month and half back and already have around fifty subscribers.

All those interested can subscribe to the feed at http://ajaydsouza.com/comments/feed/ or http://feeds.feedburner.com/ajaydsouza/comments. The former, which redirects to the latter is recommended.

For those you prefer the traditional method of email subscriptions, that is also available.

The Comments feed is the best way for you to keep track of any or all comments on this blog. You can also subscribe to receive comments from individual posts via email while commenting.

Listen to my posts

I was pondering this a while and thought of using Talkr, but Ted from Botcast Network offered to this for me for free! I’ve signed up with Amazon’s S3 to ensure that I don’t trouble him too much.

Plugins

Plugins Removed

I bought Angsuman’s Translator Pro as Everton says its got him some traffic.

I didn’t see the same on this blog, but what I did see is increased CPU usage, infact it was the reason my VPS went offline on Feb 4th. Even with WP-Cache, the CPU usage is well over 6%. It had to go. Angsuman offers free upgrades, so I am hoping when he does improve this, I’ll get an upgrade and it will be back out here.

I’ve also knocked off Popularity Contest and Share This. The former is a great plugin, but it doesn’t work with WP-Cache. Share This is good as well, but I’m trying to cut down on plugins.

Plugins Replaced

I replaced UTW with http://sw-guide.de/wordpress/wordpress-plugins/simple-tagging-plugin/. I like the ease of use of Simple Tagging and the autofill that it offers. The tags are also easier to manage and I got reports of it being lighter.

Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam has also been removed, because my blog visitors weren’t too happy with the Captcha. It’s place has been taken by Math Comment Spam Protection.

WP-ContactForm III has replaced PXS Mail Form as I started getting email spam via it.

Plugins Added

I’ve also added WP-Cache again. The real purpose was Translator Pro, but have decided to continue using the same, until I run into problems. Few hacks for WP-Cache and my pages are now being gzipped before being served

Dean’s Code Highlighter now lets me post my code very well. I don’t post much code, but it makes the little I do look good!

I added Show Top Commentators today to display all the top commenters on this blog. It shall display in the sidebar all across this site. I’ve set it to list the top 10 commenters and their links are also displayed. This is really fantastic for all of you who comment because you’re getting free links from a PR6 site. All you have to do is comment!

Something extremely weird happened today.

I was going through my Feedburner stats and found the counter (at the bottom of this page) saying 50923! :O

On checking my stats I find that it was infact true. Of this 50866 are from Netvibes

Will have to keep a watch on this and check tomorrow.

50000+ subscribers is a dream. How many are actually reading this blog?

I guess mixing feeds from across my sites was a bad idea.

I have once again made changes to my main feed and will now being serving just this blog posts in it.

However, for those interested you can always subscribe to the digested feed which contain feeds from the support forum and demo blogs. The feed is available in RSS, Atom and WMP/WAP formats.

Additionally, I have noticed that those who have subscribed to this blog feed using Bloglines were not able to view the images. I have now added bloglines to a list of referrers.

For those using other blog readers, please provide me with your feedback if you cannot view images and face other problems. I don’t have acces to all services so it becomes difficult to solve all the problems.
If you can tell me the urls that access the feeds, then I can add them to the allow list

Those of you subscribed to my feeds will have noticed a few more feeds.

Utilizing the fantastic feed mixing features of Feed Digest I have combined the four feeds, viz. this blog, my support forum, my WordPress 2.0 Test blog and WordPress 1.5 Test blog.

The max number of items in the feed has also been increased to 20 items. This shouldn’t really be a problem, because the last three are not updated with that great a frequency.
You can still subscribe to their individual feeds.

Please do let me know what you think of this. If most of the users do not like this, I may create a completely new feed which will join these four and remove them from this blog feed.
