    Thanks Ajay,
    your plugin works great! ;)

    Have a nice week-end :)

  2. Ajay says:

    Hi gidibao,

Glad to know you like the plugin. Thanks for the feedback.

  3. Rob says:

Great plugin - thanks for making it.

I’ve added it to my site and added it to my list of plugins I recommend.

  4. Ajay says:

    Hi Rob,

Glad to know you consider this as one of your favorite plugins.

  5. B says:

Love the plugin, but I have one problem. I disabled the option to display the preview to internal links but it still displays for some of them.

Using the nav bar at the top of my site I found that if I explicitly used my own URL in the link the preview does not display but the links built by the wordpress engine such as the permalink post titles, comments and anything using the get_settings(’home’) all display a preview.

  6. B says:

Sorry I will post that comment to the support forum

  7. Mike Baptiste says:

Interesting service. Not sure how useful it’ll be since the previews seem to take a long time to load, but then my blog is in a niche area so most of my links probably aren’t cached already. I hope that once a person mouses over a link, even if they don’t wait for the preview that snap grabs the snapshot anyway for the next person who mouses over.

One interesting thing is that for local ad servers, the preview still works (while if you mouse over a google banner it doesn’t) Wonder if they’ll add some type of parameter that’ll let you specify a list of domains or URLs that should not be previewed.

Didn’t seem to slow down the page loading much so no harm there - we’ll see if their caches build up fast enough for it to be useful to B or C listers :)

  8. Ajay says:

@B, thanks for posting in the support forum. I’ve replied to your post there.

@Mike, they have big plans on expanding this I am sure (from the little I’ve chatted with their support).
The previews from what I read are generated and slowed. So what you can do is hover over all the links and let it get stored.

You seem to have made an interesting observation. I think I know why it could be so.
The javascript must be parsing the a tag and adding a class or onmouseover or something that will popup the link.
For adsense and other ads that load in iframes the a is not accessible.

  9. sindhu says:

its so funneh , wierd: i just wrote this post yesterday and lo! my prayers were answered :D

    http://sindhu.110mb.com/wp-plugins/11/thumbshots-a-new-wp-plugin-idea/

but i feel a sense of loss of my idea though. sigh

  10. Ajay says:

    Hi Sindhu,

SPA is totally different from Thumbshots; maybe you can toy with this to get something to work ;)

  11. Jason Cosper says:

Outstanding plugin! Were there an option to suppress the hover on links to Flickr (or a list of domains for that matter), it would be damn near perfect.

    Keep up the great work!

  12. Ajay says:

    Hi Jason,

I think I may be able to implement this feature within the plugin though Snap doesn’t have it by itself.

Let me give this a shot with some sites and put it to test. However, one thing I forsee is that for every domain you add, some extra code will automatically be added. Unless…

  13. Jason Fields says:

    Ajay,

Drop me a line direct, but I had some ideas about making a Blog badge showing how many previews rendered and or searches generated from the SPA window… kinda like what Alexa does for rank…

  14. Ajay says:

    Hi Jason,

    I’ve sent you a mail.

Would be great to have features like this :)

  15. Rumple says:

    Hello,

The download link on this page is returning a 403 Forbidden error, I thought it might be the download manager I am using causing it but I tried to download it through the browser (Firefox) and still returns that error.

Hope you can fix it soon :)

    Thanks,

    Rumple.

  16. Ajay says:

Hi Rumple, the link is working perfectly for me. I get a zip file for download.

Anyway, I’ve sent you the direct link via email.

  17. Torley says:

Ajay, I really dig what you’ve done here! The first time I saw Snap was on Matt Mullenweg’s blog — does he use your plugin? In any case, pretty kickass! I signed up for Snap but haven’t started using it yet.

You look like you have lots of nifty enhancements here in your comments: did you use a plugin to put in your “I encourage comments.” box too, as well as the Preview and the tag-adder buttons? Very useful! Thanx in advance and keep it up. :)

  18. Ajay says:

I am not aware if Matt uses my plugin for this purpose. You can handcode the snap code as well. The plugin makes that a lot lot easier!

I’ve got plugins for the Live Preview and for adding Tags. These are ancient plugins which do their job. No fancy stuff :)

For the encouraging comments, I’ve modified my theme to display it. Ideally I wouldn’t use too many plugins. You can check out my plugins used page to see what I use.

  19. J SANCHEZ ZOLLIKER says:

Did you change anything special in your theme? Imk using the original connections, WP 2.0.5 too, but can’t seem to make your plugin work. Thanks!

  20. Ajay says:

Check if you have a wp_footer() in your theme. If not use the manual instructions above.

  21. jenny-lynn says:

wow! what an amazing plug in! thank you so much!

  22. J SANCHEZ ZOLLIKER says:

    Done it!
Posted how on support forum. Thanks Ajay!

  23. Ajay says:

    @Jenny,

Glad to know you like the plugin. Thanks for the comment. Do spread the word and check back often :)

    @SANCHEZ, I’ve replied.

  24. Didier DURAND says:

    Hi Ajay

Do you plan a similar plugin for the new Technorati function.

    See http://www.sifry.com/alerts/archives/000444.html

  25. Didier DURAND says:

Your plugin works great on my site. Thks!
    didier

  26. Ajay says:

    Glad to know that Didier.

I’ve not looked into the widget yet. Let me see what I can do :)

  27. ovizii says:

    hi there,

I can think of a nice feature you could add, I would like to exclude the preview from some of my links, so I would like to add to those links i.e. class=”technorati” a classname that will not be “parsed” by your plugin, something like: i.e. class=”technorati nopreview” to manually exclude certain links to display a preview…

  28. Ajay says:

    Hi ovizii,

Thanks for the comment. I’m currently working with the developers of SPA to see how we can enhance the previews. You may find something similar being implemented soon.

  29. jeff says:

    Hi

using wordpress is there a way to turn some external links on and some off? i want to use this to sell ads

    thanks

i’ve been emailing snap support they don’t quite get it.

  30. Ajay says:

The SPA team is working on enhancements. Turning all links off by default etc. are planned.

I believe you can try adding class = "snap_nopreview" to the links you don’t want SPA to popup.

  31. R. Richard Hobbs says:

    Nice plugin- Thanks!

  32. Jan Dembowski says:

    Nice plugin!

Is there a way to get the code inserted via wp_header and/or wp_footer?

My poor attempts at modifying the code were unsuccessful :-) I use different themes and could insert the do_action into the header.php before /head, but having the plugin do it appeals to lazy people such as myself.

  33. egen says:

Not worked link in UTF-8 charset (wiki links)

  34. Knox says:

So far I love this, but I am not able to get the local links to show a preview. Anyone here gone through this? Or am I not sleeping enough?:)

  35. Agnes Varnum says:

AJ - You are a rockstar! Thank you!

  36. Ajay says:

Hi Agnes, nice of you to think that :)

  37. jafer says:

I just put in the snap code into my header page and it seemed to be that the code worked fine in IE7 but not at all in Firefox.

Is there something different with using the plugin? Will that make it display in Firefox? Otherwise I’m wondering what the plugin does since the previews for external links are showing up at my site.

    Please help. Thank you.

  38. Ajay says:

The plugin is an easy way to put the code in. It also uses valid XHTML.
The plugin adds the code in the footer.

  39. tara says:

Good work, Ajay! It works beautifully on my site.

  40. jafer says:

Ok, I installed the plugin because I want to keep my site validated in xhtml and I assumed without the plugin it might not validate using only the Snap script.

This did make the snap preview show up in Firefox, however, no matter what I’ve tried, if I try to show internal links it doesn’t work.

Other than that the plugin works great. Any suggestions on what I should change? I added the code manually to my footer after trying it with ‘automatic insert’ first.

  41. Ajay says:

I prefer answering these questions in the support forum.

But, the reason your internal links dont display is because your settings are not correct.

  42. jafer says:

Alright, thanks. I’ve reposted my question in the support forum.

  43. Erik says:

    Hi,
Maybe I am missing something but how do I get the Snap to work on my WordPress blog hosted on Wordpress? I have seen sites using it so I know it can be done.

    Thanks,
    Erik

  44. Ajay says:

This plugin is not for WordPress.com blogs. I have no clue how to get SPA to work on them. You can try their support forums for a solution.

  45. Jason Fields says:

    Hello,

If you are all not aware now, we have started a beta trial of Snap Preview Anywhere (SPA) for Wordpress.com hosted blog users. Matt @ Wordpress has posted about this trial program on the official Wordpress.com blog.

    Read more about it here…
    http://wordpress.com/blog/2006/12/29/snap-to-it/

Also, keep on the look-out for more Snap Preview Anywhere news at Wordpress.com in the next few weeks!

  46. Bogdan says:

    Nice plugin, thanks.

I only wonder what is the strategy of snap.com - do they plan to add eventually ads in those previews? Can’t see another simple and straightforward way to get any revenue from this kind of service…

  47. jafer says:

Now that I’ve posted in the support forum, I’m not getting any answers. It seems that posts on this site gets answered more often.

I got one answer on how to do something, which I had already done, and then no follow up. Can you tell me whether there’s a fix to the problem I posted in the forum?

  48. mamphp says:

my problem is not function and idont now why. ihave corect installed.who is that problem?

    thanks

  49. Ajay says:

@Bogdan, Their strategy is beyond me. I guess you can write to Snap about that

@jafer, I have answered all questions in the forum. could you please point me to the post. I never answer support questions out here unless it is of a general nature.

@mamphp, Please use the support forum. Though, I can see the SPA on your site.

  50. jafer says:

Ajay, it was the Reply #9 in the forum that told you what my settings were and that I had tried what you had advised and it still wasn’t working. I guess I was expecting you to tell me there was a different fix or that there was nothing that could be done. It was posted on Dec. 30th.

  51. Andreas Skowronek says:

Very fine work, Ajay. If there were an award for a fast and easy installed wp-plugin you would deserve it.

  52. Ajay says:

    @jafer,

Sorry about not replying, for some reason that just didnt show up in all my results and I kept thinking mine was the last reply. Anyway I replied there. You will need to update the plugin to the latest version I released two days back. This should fix your internal link display.

@Andreas, I wish I could have automated the registration as well, but I guess that won’t be possible, for now atleast :(

  53. jafer says:

Ok, thanks, Ajay. The newest version did it. Now everything is working perfectly.

  54. Ajay says:

    Glad to know that :)

  55. Jared says:

    thx!

    I love this plugin!

  56. Popie says:

Great plug-in, I searched and found that girafa.com were doing the same with a lot more images in their database. Competition for us :) is always good.

  57. Ajay says:

Girafa has been offering thumbnails for a long time. It is useful if you have less than 2000 to display.

Becomes a bit expensive beyond that for normal site users.

  58. tjompa says:

    Hi there,

Wonderful plugin, thanks. A question, do you know if there is possible to set the external links to _blank in some way?

  59. Ajay says:

I don’t think it is possible as of now.

  60. kieran says:

    Dear Adjay

I have some constructive (I hope) critcism

    1. the information, at the top of this page, on what the plugin is, who needs it and what it does needs to be much clearer - and written for non programmers. Normal bloggers like me don’t have the first clue what you mean.

    2. Then when we go to the support forum to ask questions we find we need to register - why? Its not like you are getting innundated there and registering is a right royal pain (here I am writing this as I wait for my “activation email”) 12mins and counting…

Life should be simpler than this.
    Kieran

  61. Ajay says:

    @Kieran,

    1. I think that makes sense. Let me see how I can work on it. It sometimes is a bit hard for a programmer to write non-programming material :|

    2. I would have loved to keep the support forum open, but the moment I do that the forum gets royally spammed, and hence the necessity to require registration. The idea is to also collate all support queries in one location and keep the size of this page due to comments smaller (hopefully). If you’re account hasn’t been activated please email me the contact details you used, so I can activate it.

  62. Franciov says:

Now I’m using your plugin too! ;)

  63. Ajay says:

    Hi Franciov,

    Glad to know that :)

  64. Chris Engler says:

I use WordPress on my GoDaddy server and your plugin works fantastic. I am very impressed. Thanks a billion.

  65. Ajay says:

    Hi Chris,

Glad to know it’s working well for you :)

Do spread the word and make a post about it to tell your visitors.

  66. Kieran says:

    Hi Ajay

before I got to ask my questions it seems like wordpress has adopted the plugin for everyone. Thanks and best wishes.

  67. Ajay says:

    Hi Kieran,

Well, this plugin doesn’t work on WP.com anyway :)

I do not know what they are using for it.

    Ajay

  68. UK Magazine Subscriptions says:

Great Plugin, makes my site 100% better!!

  69. Jimmy says:

    Hi,

When I installed your plugin on my blog it worked great except for one thing. I have many Flash videos on my site and if a link is too close to the video embed, the snap previews go behind the flash video almost like a background layer and is quite obstructed.

Is there anyway I can fix this as I would really like to use your plugin?

    Thanks.

  70. teebee says:

    Great plugin thanks!

On the previews there is an Options link. It doesn’t seem to anything as whenever I click I just get a 404 error page. Is there a way to remove it?

  71. Ajay says:

    @Jimmy, already answered

@teebee, This is something inbuilt into SPA. I believe the developers are doing something about it.

  72. Guido says:

Thanks for the plugin Ajay !

  73. Ajay says:

    @Guido, you’re welcome :)

  74. seo says:

Awesome, this is great! Thanks for putting together this plugin.

  75. Hamtaro says:

    Great Plugin
Thx for your work, i love this plugin !

    Bye

  76. Hamtaro says:

I think i have a problem with my site and your plugin.
The preview is an erreur database but my site is ok…
    Have you a solution ?

Thx and sorry for my bad english, i am french ^^

    Bye

  77. Ajay says:

    @Seo, You’re welcome

@Hamtaro, please direct the query in the support forum. There have been a lot of threads which various problems, you’re query may be already resolved …

  78. LB says:

Good, clear instructions made this a snap to install, and it looks great too! Thanks!!

  79. Vijay says:

    Thanks for a great plugin.
Yours was the most easy to install of all the plugins that I have used.
I agree with the other commenter above that you deserve an award for this.
    Keep up the great work.

  80. shakeb says:

    Hi Ajay,
There is a small problem with the Snap preview anywhere plugin. When I went to edit my posts the Visual rich editor (Wordpress Default editor) wouldn’t come up and it would just wait and wait. I disabled snap preview anywhere plugin and now I can edit my posts with the visual rich editor.
    I am using Wordpress 2.0.7

  81. lightdot says:

thanks a lot Ajay, great plug-in, I enjoy it very much. :-))))))

  82. Ajay says:

@LB, @Vijay, @lightdot, glad to know you folks like the plugin. About the award, well I do have options for a little donation if you’re happy with it :)

    @shakeb, check this post.

  83. UtahSaint says:

great plugin Ajay - many thanks for creating this!

  84. Neville Franks says:

Ajay, thanks for this plugin. I needed to add: to my footer.php which I found out about by looking at your forum. It would be worth mentioning this in your installation instructions. Anyway great job. I’m going to e-mail you about Surfulater.

  85. Ajay says:

    @UtahSaint, glad you like it.

@Neville, got the email, have replied to it.
The needed to add part of the code didn’t display, you can send that portion to me in the email.
Thanks for checking the forums :)

  86. Damino says:

Hi, I’m fond of this plugin but since WP 2.0.7 I’ve noticed that the WYSIWYG TinyMCE can’t be displayed if the plugin is activated

  87. Deepak Kumar Vasudevan says:

How to enable Snap on blog hosted with Wordpress.com?

  88. Ajay says:

@Damino, I already answered the question above.

@Deepak, WP.com already has it inbuilt. It’s somewhere in Options > Extras I think

  89. shakeb says:

    Hi ajay
Do you know if the Plugin works fine with 2.1 ?
Also I am using CLutter free so now I can edit posts with snap preview plugin

  90. Ajay says:

shakeb, I’m not sure how the status is like with the WYSIWYG and SPA.

Let me iterate that it is not the problem of the plugin. I also can’t blame it on the SPA javascript.
It’s just a clashing of the javascripts. I think this is because of the onload for both. Just a guess however.

  91. r34l says:

I’m using it on Wp 2.1 and that’s all fine for now, no problem found.

Thanks for this great plugin :)

  92. Heather says:

Qucik question… is there a way (if the plugin is set to show previews for all links) to disable per post. For example, for my thumbnails in my blog, I have enabled a plugin to show the image right there when you click the thumbnail, when I use that plugin in a post I would like to be able to disable the snap preview. Is this possible?

  93. Johnny Fuery says:

Great work… feel free to add my email address to your announcement list (if/when it exists)

    :-)

  94. Gyanguru says:

Hey that was a Nice Plugin but there was a problem with me It was not auto inserting the code so I had to do alternate method but thanks for the plugin

  95. Ajay says:

If it wasn’t inserting it automatically, there is an 80% chance that this was because the wp_footer hook was missing in your theme.

  96. sylv says:

nice plugin. I’m using it now. =) now snap has made an option of making the preview optional. Will your plugin support that feature too? Cheers.

  97. Ajay says:

    @sylv,

I’m working on a new version which I hope to get out on Monday or latest Tuesday. You can see some of it functional on this blog.

I need to get in the theme support and icon support as well, which I am working on right now.

[...] Nothing to do with SEO The final change I’ve made was to install a snap plugin, now this will have no effect on my PR, but it is quite cool, what it does is add a little floating window preview any external links, allowing readers to take a glimpse of what they’re clicking on before they actually click. To be honest, I’ve not yest decided if this is a good thing or annoying, but would be cool is if it could be plugged into mcafee site advisor so that users could see if it’s a safe link before clicking it. Ultimate Tag Warrior allows the creation of tags for: Technorati, Flickr, Delicious, Wikipedia and others, including your own tags page for easy searching. By using tags, not only will searches be easier but UTW also can create a tag cloud. With many choices for the cloud, from font size to colors, check ours out on the right sidebar. Another feature of UTW is to be able to list related post as per the tags, keeping the interest of visitors is always a good thing. Check in Part 3 on how UTW helps with backlinks and getting your blog known. Snap Preview Anywhere – The Snap Preview plugin allows your visitors to see a sneek peek of any link on your site. While this preview isn’t a large image, it’s enough for readers to know if they’ve been to the site and know if they want to visit it. The plugin has the option of allowing you to have previews of only outbound links or all links including any linked back to your own content. There have been some that complain that the preview gets in the way at times, but this is one plugin I enjoy. [...]
