Should I shift from Gmail to Windows Live Mail or Yahoo?

For the second time yesterday, I awoke to find my Gmail account locked. This is the second time that this has happened.

The only notification is that it is locked for unusual activity. The “help” page states these as:

  1. Receiving, deleting, or downloading large amounts of mail via POP or IMAP in a short period of time. If you’re getting the error message, ‘Lockdown in Sector 4,’ you should be able to access Gmail again after waiting 24 hours.
  2. Sending a large number of undeliverable messages (messages that bounce back).
  3. Using file-sharing or file-storage software, browser extensions, or third party software that automatically logs in to your account.
  4. Leaving multiple instances of Gmail open.
  5. Browser-related issues. Please note that if you find your browser continually reloading while attempting to access your Inbox, it’s probably a browser issue, and it may be necessary to clear your browser’s cache and cookies.

I’m pretty sure that I have not violated any of these. In fact since the last time it got locked I made sure that I kept Gmail closed as much as possible, since I thought 4 or 5 above could be a possible problem.

Anyway, I’m pretty irritated with the whole deal and am planning to make the move to either Windows Live Mail or Yahoo! Mail. I plan on continuing to use Google Talk to chat with those I know as well as all the other services of Google.

So, what do you suggest I shift to? Windows Live Mail or Yahoo! Mail or should I create yet another Gmail account?

  1. I suggest instead leaving a message on the google gmail forums to ask what the problem is..could it be a compatibility issue with one of the firefox plugins ? try using ie / opera for a while.

  2. What about using @ajaydsouza.com? 😀

I use all the e-mail services (gmail live and yahoo – for their IM’s).

  3. Gmail has faithfully served me for quite a while now. In fact I’m so used to it, the thought of shifting to another mail scares me.

TBH, just leave a message on the gmail forums like Aditya said and give that a go before making the switch.
I’ve had a hotmail / or windows live mail account since it’s inception… used it till gmail came along and have almost forgotten about it. Don’t like the interface, don’t like the speed, don’t like anything..

  4. I would buy Google’s paid storage for $50/year (?) for the extra space. Then, if they try to d|ck ya for \”abusing\”, you can demand to know why since you’ve obviously not violated the terms.

I have never had mine locked in all the years using Gmail. I leave it open all day long, send large files, etc. The only thing I don’t do is use the shared-storage extensions for Firefox or whatever. Those just seem shifty to begin with.

    Good luck!

Oh, do you think Microsoft is going to be any better with Hotmail? Do you think Yahoo will be around long enough?

I agree with a previous comment… I don’t know what I would do if I had to switch from Gmail. It’d be like going out of the house without my watch and ring on, and realizing I left my wallet at my mistresses house (if I had one).

  5. @Nikhil, I’m somewhat in the same boat.

@count, I definitely do not wish to pay for my email. It’s just not worth with all the free services around.

I think I will backup all my email on my computer and then see how it goes. One more locking and then I will make the switch.

  6. Is it your Paypal email? If yes, I think you should not shift soon. It is best to get a private email using your own domain. Also, make sure to extend the domain purchase to few years ahead.

  7. Figure out why it’s locked? I use a FF extension that checks it for new mail every ten minutes but so far no glitches. Are you using a plugin? If so maybe it’s checking too often. Personally I’d just open a new Gmail account.

  8. I have moved from Gmail to Windows Live Mail with slim and smart Live ID because it is simple and very beautiful.Gmail was best in the start but now it is going down, and have some errors during reading message.

  9. I don’t like Gmail because of the IMAP implementation. I prefer Exchange (get it hosted somewhere). It’s more expensive but so much more fun 🙂

  10. That sux, can’t imagine why they dump multiple accounts unless you just found a bug or some file you are sending is making it puke. Gawd knows.
Sorry man, that sux. Especially if you’ve had it for any length of time.
